Sarah Iannarone to Testify at City Council
Today's Portland City Council session will hold a vote on the community priority of rethinking public safety, as championed by Commissioners Jo Ann Hardesty and with the support of Commissioner Chloe Eudaly. Sarah Iannarone, candidate for Portland Mayor, will testify to compel the Mayor and other Councilors who are so far uncommitted to take decisive action that supports this widely-held community priority. Iannarone first proposed a Rethinking Public Safety plan in November of 2019.
Sarah Iannarone, Candidate for Portland Mayor, said in a statement:
This vote needs to happen today, because it is a matter of life and death. Public testimony on this issue has unanimously favored wisely reallocating the waste and excess of the Portland Police Bureau to programs that actually aid in the safety and well-being of our community. The proposed change takes takes the budget back to 2015 levels, prior to the explosive growth of militarized policing under Mayor Wheeler.
The public meeting will begin at 2:00pm today.
